To kick off our first 'HOME STUDIO' section we're going to address the very starting point. Many people want to give this a try and see if they've got what it takes to be a film composer. Most are already good musicians or composers but after a trip to the local music store they've found that it could cost tens of thousands to get set up... a very expenive experiment! Consequently, the equipment costs are enough to put off some wonderful talent from ever developing. Well... we want to address that issue now with a budget way to get started on a platform that you could expand as your experience increases.

Not long ago, you could be talented, but never get the opportunity to show or develop your talents due to the extreme cost of production. Now, all that has changed. Software and hardware developers have found solutions to make this industry more accessible through low costs to the consumer meaning that you could set up a multi track studio in your own home... and we're going to show you how that's possible for less than $3,600. Here's one example of a basic set up:
  • Apple iMac 20" 2.4 GHz - $1499
  • 4GB RAM Upgrade from Cruicial - $329
  • Digital Performer 5 - $500
  • MOTU's Symphonic Instrument - $280
  • Digidesign M-Box (inc. ProTools LE) - $450
  • Cables - $40
  • Sony MDR7506 Headphones - $99
  • M-Audio Keyboard 88ES - $200
  • Alesis M1 Active 520 MOnitors - $200

  • Total Price - $3598

COMING NEXT MONTH

We're often asked - "I have the money to get some gear but I wouldn't have a clue how to set it all up. What should I do?" On next months edition of the Home Studio Set Up we'll look at putting it all together.
