When MOTU released DP5 the assigned their own shortcut keys to certain functions that they considered important. But there are functions that you might perform often but there are no shortcuts assigned to them. Don't worry - you can assign your very own shortcuts. Here's how:

Lets say that we are frequently having to change the velocity of certain notes or phrases, and having to constantly go to Region/Change Velocity... becomes annoying after a few times. So I want to assign a shortcut key to automatically open up the Change Velocity window.
  • Go to Setup/Commands (or SHORTCUT KEY: SHIFT L).
We know that the Change Velocity command is in the Region menu, so
  • scroll down to 'Region Menu' and you will see 'Change Velocity...'
The next column to the right is blank. If you click in it you will see it turn white with a cursor. This means you can choose your shortcut by simply typing it in.
  • In this case lets choose the OPTION key and the letter V. Press enter and you will see the assigned shortcut in a gray box.
If you were to type in a command that was already assigned to another command the 'Binding Conflict' window will open, telling you which command already has this shortcut assigned to it.

If that's the case then pressing 'no' will allow you to choose another shortcut key. If you press yes, then the function that previously had that shortcut assigned will no longer have a shortcut. If you make a big mistake and can't remember which commands changed you can always reset it back to the factory defaults by going to the mini-menu of the Commands window and select, 'Revert to Default Key Bindings'.

One Step Further

If you have one of those fancy MIDI controller keyboards with knobs and buttons on it, you can also assign oneof those buttons to be your shortcut. If you widen the Commands window a little further you will see the column 'MIDI Event'. By clicking in this box and then pressing the button on your MIDI controller that you want to assign as the shortcut and then press enter, you will then have assigned the button on the MIDI controller at the shortcut to perform the relevant command.

To Remove A Shortcut

It's simple: select the shortcut and press delete, then enter. It will disappear.
