Plug-ins are like add extra function to the host software such as Digital Performer 5 or ProTools. It litterally plugs in different functions to the software. At the core level, these plugins may provide enhancements such as reverb and delays. However, at the high end there are capabilities only limited by the specifications of your computer. You can do pitch alterations, time stretches, note corrections, EQ, surround sound, mastering... the list is endless due to the fact that new technologoes are being developed daily. Virtual Instruments are another example of plugins.

For the scope of these initial examples, I am going to explain how to make the reverb plugin function both in DP5 and in ProTools so that you have a grounding in the principles of a plug-in. After that it comes down to your willingness to experiment and become creative. Please be sure to check out our reviews page to learn which plugins we recommend, and check back here often for more tips and tricks as we add them.

For both DP5 and ProTools you need to be in the mixer windows in order to load in the reverb plug-in. (just as a side note, many VIs have built in reverb. This method is to add reverb to the VI as a whole within DP5, whereas in ProTools this adds reverb to the individual track.)

In ProTools sinply click on of the inserts windows and a pop out will occur. Select multi-channel plug-in/Reverb/D-Verb (stereo). If you have purchased other reverb plugins they will appear here.

In Digital Performer 5, you will need to be on the same fader channel as the one in which the VI is loaded (or if it is an audio track then that will also work). Underneath the name of the VI (in this case I've loaded Synthogy's Ivory) select an insert and select Reverb.

In both applications a new window will appear:
ProTools Digital Performer 5

There are very similar properties on both, namely:
  • Choice of setting (i.e. church, hall, plate, etc.)
  • Mix: Determines how much reverb (wet) and original sound (dry) blend together
  • Reverb time / Decay: for how long the sounds reverberates
  • Hi / Lo Filters: specify how much of the 'high end' and 'low end' of the sound is filtered
By experimenting with various settings you can actually find anything from a unique sound through to very polished sounds. Bear in mind this is only one type of plug-in.

More plug-ins will be featured here as time progresses. If there's anything you want explained, or if you have specific questions that you would like explained, do not hesitate to get in touch and we'll do our best to feature an answer on the site.
