There are a number of ways to input notes from playing the pieces in via a MIDI controller through to manually assigning a note in the notation window. If you do play the notes in it will be almost impossible to play every single note with 100% perfection so there are several methods of 'tidying' them up through a process called 'Quantize'. When quantizing a section of music you can make it so that each note is lined up perfectly on the beat or other note value according to your selections.

In this example the Quantize is set to make the
note position and duration to the nearest 1/4 note.

Of course there is a downside to quatizing which is that although the music is accurate, it may sound a little too perfect and mechanical. Using techniques such as 'Humanize' and 'Sensitivity' settings will help the music sound more like a live performance.

When you're using the sequencer to score something that will later be performed by live musicians you're going to want to make the note be as 'perfect' as possible so that whichever software you use for notation will import the notes with accuracy. To keep opening up the Quantize window for every section you record will slow down the process of scoring and rob you of precious time. Fortunately, your sequencer is well equipped to overcome the problem though a technique called 'Input Quantize'.

Input Quantize will automatically Quantize your live performance. Once you've made your settings every note you play will be 'rounded off' to the nearest value that you've selected. In DP5 you can get to Input Quantize in the Studio menu or SHOTCUT KEY: APPLE KEY + 8. For the purposes of creating notation for live orchestra be sure to Quantize the Attack and Releases so that you can notate the exact duration of each note too.

Doing this will greatly save time when it comes to printing out music!
