There may be a few times when you want to synchronize your sequencer with software running on another computer. Such scenarios woudl be that you want to multi-track record your sequence to ProTools which is running on another computer. This is quite a simple process if both computers are Apple.
To synch 2 Apple computers you will need to open your Audio MIDI setup program which is found in Hard Drive / Applications / Utilities. When this is open, select the MIDI Devices tab at the top and double click on the Network icon. A new window will appear (as shown here) and you will see the network's Apple computers appear in the list. Simply select the computer with which you'll be synching and press 'Connect'. The connected computers will appear ion the list on the right hand side. (N.B. You may need to change the permissions of who may connect.)

Synch Settings In Your Sequencer
Now that the network is connected up, you simply need to tell your Sequencer whether it will be transmitting or receiving synch and whether it's the slave (i.e. the one who follows the other computer's controls). In DP5 these settings can be found in your Preferences or in the Setup menu. There are 3 options that are important for us (assuming frame rates on both machines are correctly set the same way) Receive Sync Transmit Sync and Slave To External Sync.

In the Transmit and Receive window that pops up, you need to select what port you will be sending or receiving sync. In the above example of synching between 2 Apple computers you will need to set this setting to 'Network' as it was in the Network settings of the Audio MIDI setup where we linked the two computers together. If you synchronize through any other means then you must select the ports from which you want to send or receive. When receiving synch, there are seveal formats to synch to, but usually it will be the MTC, DTL or DTLe setting. While receiving you can also choose to synch to 'any port'.

Finally, if you're receiving, you need to set the sequencer to 'slave' mode. This can be done by clicking on the receive synch button on the control, selecting 'Slave to External Sync' from the Setup menu or pressing SHOTCUT KEY: Apple 7.
